Following 5 years of construction Gerber Architekten has finished the conversion and extension of the national library of Riyadh, The King Fahad National Library, a single of the most critical cultural buildings in Saudi Arabia. The delicate textile facade, a defining element that supplies protection from the sun, was inspired by standard Middle Eastern layout and consists of fabric triangles held in location with stress loaded steel cable.

“At 1st sight, the library looks to be a new constructing but actually it is an extension of the existing cruciform developing.” says Gerber Architek10. “Instead of a straightforward extension, the present constructing has been totally enclosed with a new façade at some distance from the authentic.”

“Not only was the necessary added room produced but also a respectful distance was maintained in order to give the current building a dignified setting. The location which had been reserved for the extension is now utilised to create a public space to bind the library to its urban context.”

“The square new creating encases the previous library, which holds the archives like a treasure chest. The outdated roof will be a reading space, whereas its newly developed dome stays visible above the flat roof of the new constructing. A 3-dimensional steel wire development serves as an external sun safety. Its white membrane interprets Arabic traditions technologically and culturally in a present day way.”
